About 'tuscaloosa barbecue'|Tuscaloosa Roadtrip
Although Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is primarily a college town and the home of the University of Alabama, there is plenty to do in the Druid City when school is not in session. The Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, which opened in 2011, is located on Jack Warner Parkway in downtown Tuscaloosa. During the summer of 2012, a variety of musical acts will be playing at the amphitheater. Some notable acts playing the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater this summer include Daughtry on June 16, Counting Crows on June 28, Ringo Starr on July 3, Crosby, Still, and Nash, on July 11, Dukes of September on July 28, Merle Haggard and Jamey Johnson on August 11, and B.B. King and the Tedeschi Trucks Band on August 25. R&B fans and beer connoisseurs will enjoy the Blues and Brews Music Festival on July 21, which begins at 5:00 and offers beer samples and blues music. Ticket prices vary according to the event. Tickets for all of these acts are available through Ticketmaster or at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater box office. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone by calling (800) 745-3000. The Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation Authority's July 4th Celebration on the River event will also take place at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater between 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. on Independence Day. The event will feature free, kid-friendly games and activities such as a bounce house and a sack race. The Tuscaloosa Symphony will play at 7:30 p.m. inside the amphitheater. Admission is free. This event also features a free fireworks show. Sports fans and barbecue aficionados will enjoy the A-Club Barbecue Cook-off at Bryant Denny Stadium on June 23. The event is open to the public, and tickets are $25. A ticket to the cook-off includes access to the event, a barbecue plate provided by Jim N Nick's Barbecue, a locker room tour, access to the field, and family fun. There will be three separate barbecue competitions, a boat show, interviews with current and former varsity athletes at the University of Alabama, and more. The Brawl at the Mall, a boxing match, begins at 7:00 p.m. on June 23 at McFarland Mall. Tuscaloosa's own professional boxer and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Deontay Wilder will fight Owen Beck, the Jamaican heavyweight champion. Tickets range in price from $25 to $100 and can be purchased in advance by calling (205) 799-1696. The Hot Hundred, also known as the Hottest Ride in the South, is a bike race that begins in Tuscaloosa on July 28. Riders can choose between five distances ranging from 28 to 103 miles. The 103-mile trek goes through rural Tuscaloosa and Greene counties. Registration is $35 prior to July 24 and then increases to $50. All proceeds benefit the Tuscaloosa Community Mental Health Task Force and Indian Rivers Community Mental Health. The Arc of Tuscaloosa, an organization benefitting people with developmental disabilities, is hosting its 20th annual charity golf tournament at North River Yacht Club on June 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A cocktail reception for the golf tournament will be held on June 24 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., also at the Yacht Club. The fee for the cocktail reception is $50 for non-golfers, and the fee to enter the tournament is $300 for a single player and $1200 for a foursome. Thirty-five miles from Tuscaloosa, at the Tannehill Ironworks Historic State Park in McCalla, there are numerous summer events. Tannehill Trade Days occur from March to November, on the third Saturday and Sunday of the month, and feature over 200 vendors in 2012. The official summer fun began Memorial Day weekend with a Civil War reenactment of the Skirmish at Tannehill, and more events are planned for the rest of the summer. On June 9 and 16 annual Down Home Psaltery Festival will feature musical entertainment. In July, the Antique Engine and Tractor Show will take place at the park from July 13 - 15. Tannehill State Park will host the VW Bug Blast on August 25. The Bug Blast charges $15 to enter the competition, $50 for venders, and $5 for the swap meet. All Volkswagens are welcome at the event. Summer ends at Tannehill with the 21st annual Labor Day Celebration and Moon Pie Eating Contest on September 3. Park admission is $3 per adult, $2 for senior citizens, and $1 for children 6-11. Children ages five and under are free. There are also several recurring fun summer events in Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa Barnyard, a petting zoo on Turner Bridge Road in northern Tuscaloosa, is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is $10 per person. Art Night, which is free to the public, is an open exhibition of local artwork at galleries throughout Tuscaloosa. Art Night occurs on the first Thursday of the month. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, adults can enjoy wine tasting at Carpe Vino from 5 to 7 p.m. The Bama Belle paddle boat will offer sightseeing cruises on June 10, July 22, and August 26. Boarding begins at 1:30 p.m., and the cruise lasts from 2:00 to 2:30. Admission is $15, and reservations are required. To book a cruise, call (205)339-1108. Clearly, there are fun opportunities for all interests and age groups in Tuscaloosa year-round. If you live in Tuscaloosa, are taking summer classes at the University of Alabama, or are just visiting the community during the summer of 2012, be sure to take advantage of the many events and activities Tuscaloosa offers. |
